Embracing diversitytrainingdissemination, and community through a unique research experience.

Our Mission

The DAWN-IRES Scholars Program is primarily designed to enhance the progress of science through a unique global educational training experience for a diverse cohort of US students.  The themes defining the broader impact of the program include diversitytrainingdissemination, and community.  The program incorporates a wide range of professional development activities that are focused on advancing scientific communication skills (e.g., weekly seminars, hack days, oral presentations abroad and stateside).  The students will also build professional research toolkits, including learning programming, data analysis and presentation techniques.  Dissemination of research will occur through the DAWN-IRES Scholars Symposium at the end of each summer in Copenhagen, together with a presentation at the students’ local institutions and the national American Astronomical Society meeting.

Copenhagen is the bike capital of the world, with half of citizens commuting by bicycle daily. Right in the heart of this historic city is the second oldest operational amusement park, the beautiful Tivoli Gardens (right). Nyhavn port (bottom, left) is filled each day with people enjoying the relaxed atmosphere by the canal, jazz music and great food. Copenhagen is big enough to be a metropolis with shopping, culture and nightlife, yet small enough to be intimate, safe and easy to navigate.

I haven’t had time to do a study abroad program, but I still wanted the experience of living in a different country, so this opportunity seemed perfect.

What We've Achieved

  • The inaugural 2019 cohort included 5 women and 2 men, and the resilient 2021 cohort 4 women and 3 men (including 3 graduate students), both from a diverse range of universities

  • Check out the impressions of past DAWN-IRES Scholars through our Scholars Blog.

  • The 2019 cohort of DAWN-IRES Scholars had a great week in Honolulu, HI for the 235th AAS Meeting. While the 2022 AAS was cancelled, the 2021 cohort will attend a future meeting.

  • 2019 DAWN-IRES Scholar David Vizgan wins 2020 Chambliss Medal, and Darren Stroupe receives Honorable Mention. Congratulations David and Darren!

  • Congratulations to 2021 DAWN-IRES Scholar Hollis Akin, who submitted a paper based on his summer research to the Astrophysical Journal in November 2021! (link coming soon)
